I had an old, earlier generation Stampede receiver and a bunch of other parts (yet not a complete internals kit) and figured I ought to have at least one shorty. I liked the idea of a pocket-sized yet full-powered and full-auto HVZ assault rifle.

That led to my own unique take on the Krinkov style 'pede.

Immediately I decided I didn't want a typical SGnerf SMG. For me, there is absolutely no point in compromising the Stampede's already excellent ergonomics and handling with a minimization like this if the resulting gun isn't small and short enough to fit somewhere the full-size counterpart cannot. A SGnerf SMG is still quite long.

I settled on being as aggressive as possible with both barrel and stock lengths, and keeping the thumbhole stock for comfort (I like them) and the battery box for cleanliness so there aren't packs and wiring hanging out. After all, this is a streamlined little thing meant to be a concealed carry HVZ weapon that stows in a regular civvy backpack without attracting undead attention.

The receiver was reconstructed with scrap ABS. Nowadays, I would use my homemade PVC sheet.

One more funny little thing, the gun will stand vertically on the buttplate like this.

That buttplate is made from a Vulcan ammo can lid.
With Rayven.

I initially planned this one to be a testbed for some more advanced stuff like MOSFETs, but I ended up just doing an ordinary build with it when I got my donor gun. It got the Everbilt 11.20kg spring and a basic stock bolt, stock 360 motor, stock cycle switch, all new 16gauge harness, Deans and all the usual electrical. Power is packs, per my standard.

Right now it is using two smaller 8 cell 1600mah Ni-MH packs (at 19.2v, though voltage is only one of many battery parameters to consider), but I have been trying to move away from this setup for Everbilt 'pedes. Those smaller packs are great for flywheel guns, but with springers and 300 series motors it's like RC or airsoft and you want as much discharge rate as possible. I switched the Swarmpede to two big beefy 6 cell Ni-cd packs and its reliability has picked up immensely from the lower motor top speed without too much of a loss in cyclic rate for either the Swarmfire or the Stampede. That is all about current right there - when you do springers, remember that you can never have too much battery behind that thing.

As to performance, it's usual for this build, 360-400RPM (400 and squirrelly as hell with fully charged packs!) and chrono'd at 90-105fps with 1.3s.torukmakto4http://www.blogger.com/profile/10734470012890561585noreply@blogger.com25tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1146179979337871058.post-19145595318094056892012-11-11T10:07:00.000-08:002012-11-11T20:36:04.147-08:00Chronograph and Elite mods, 28 days later...So it's been awful dead here.

I guess all the action has moved over to NM&R as of late, but I do know this place still exists and I am still a member. I'm not sure what the plans are for this place or if this post should be placed here given the NM&R deal, so if you want to move it or me over, that's OK. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to post much of anything back in the day due to being busy and having a distinct lack of new mods or any other nerf-related material, so sorry to Darthrambo for not being the contributor I should have at the time.

Anyway... now to business.

First of all, this is the latest addition to my nerf gear, a Chrony F1 chronograph.

Some of you may be familiar with chronos from seeing them used in Jerm's and SGnerf's blog posts in the past, but for those of you who are not, a chronograph is an instrument for measuring the velocity of projectiles.

Most nerfers are familiar with the old standby method for quantifying the velocity or energy of darts, the range test - but truth be told, ranges as a measure of gun performance are inaccurate, imprecise, and lacking in repeatability. It's a relic of the 1990s subject to way too many extraneous variables and not suited to the level of effort, practicality and thought put into nerf nowadays especially on the war side of things. You look at any other hobby involving the shooting of something (aside from soakers and laser tag, for obvious reasons) and you will find that velocity measurements and chronos are the standard.

The last straw was that ranges weren't working for me and trying to get usable results just made me mad more than anything. Especially for anything that shoots streamlines, ranges are totally useless - and even for war guns that shoot stefans, about all I could get was "Yeah, it shot that dart real fast and it went a long way." It's not enough resolution to get any real idea of small changes.

Then there is the matter of actually finding some suitable area to shoot darts for a range test, and then interminably recording distances and picking up darts. If I had to thoroughly test out 7 builds of something (like I did recently) by range, I would be out all day and my data still wouldn't be that great.

Enter the chrono.

It's a massive difference. Using a chrono is convenient, instant and highly accurate. Without it, I would have not bothered giving any attention to the matter I address below, because first of all the streamline-shooting guns would foul up my data, and second, it would be too much of a pain and I would rather just wing it, forget the science, forget the last bit of performance, forget that nagging feeling that my primary is suddenly shooting cold and something major might be wrong, and go shoot zombies anyway.

If you mod seriously or are at all interested in tuning guns of any variety, I highly recommend you get yourself a chronograph. IMO, they should be one of those tools that every good builder has, right alongside the Dremel and drill press. They aren't too expensive, either - check Walmart!

OK, now to the second part of this post, which concerns the NSE Rampage/Retaliator and their air restrictors whose removal is the subject of myths - specifically, that the AR has "no" effect on performance with either a stock spring or upgrade springs such as OMW and SGnerf's options.

I decided to put this to the test in the interest of making it clearer for the many members of my squad who have recently acquired these direct-plunger CS guns and want to mod them (there is a group buy of springs in progress as we speak). Along with that, one of my own upgrades for these was put to the test.

You may remember the strange-looking bolt in that Retaliator in my "new author" post. That was a sort of homebrew Massacre style "tightbore" bolt fabricated from CPVC, called the Thunderbolt or T-bolt. Here's a closer look:

Assembled to Retal bolt carrier and fitted with O-ring

It's fairly self-explanatory what it was intended to do: give better barrel fit and more efficiency. It has a full 2.5" of perfect spring fit, unlike a loose stock barrel, and anyone who has rebarreled anything or used a Massacre kit can attest to the seeming infallibility of the old NIC approach to designing a springer barrel. Loose is bad, right? There's no way perfectly fitting CPVC could do anything but help... or so I thought.

So anyway, a bunch of builds of Retaliator and some Rampage got chrono'd with both 1.3g Streamlines and 1.0g Elite darts.

Here is all the data.

As to the AR, the myth of "no effect" on performance is soundly busted. The AR does, both with stock springs and upgrades, exactly what you would expect an AR does - loses you 3 to 8 fps, which is not as small as it sounds when you are shooting stock 70 with elite darts; removing it is around a 10% improvement in the case of stock spring and elite darts - in range testing terms, the vague "5-10 feet" that AR removals always claim. So, this is exactly what is expected for an AR removal on an average Nerf product. Nothing is different here.

On the flip side, these shoot very well stock, so whether that small improvement is worth it to you is the real question. Past guns that shoot 45-50fps stock may have been really hurting for power; these, not so much. There is something missing from the data, and that is the Rampage's AR-removed tests which I have no opportunity to do right now - but tentatively, the Rampage's AR is much more aggressive, and you should have a lot more to gain from removing it than on a Retaliator.

Now for the REALLY interesting side effect of this testing: that Thunderbolt? Well, it bumped velocity slightly with a stock spring in an unpublished test (though only a few fps over a simple AR-removed stock bolt) but LOST me performance with the OMW spring, as the data illustrates. Believe me, that is NOT a fluke. There were more shots that verified the data, and the bolt was tested with multiple guns and checked for perfect sealing to the PT and proper pushback distance and all was spot on. The simple fact is, these guns (in complete opposition to everything we know about springers) DO NOT LIKE even mildly tight barrels! A Massacre bolt for one of these, which would be near identical to my stab at barrel upgrades if it was designed according to OMW's past successes at rebarreling the old reverse-plunger guns, would be near useless!

Do not do this. It's not worth it, and if you swap springs, it's harmful. Just remove your AR and enjoy the performance.

So, why this seemingly nonsensical behavior? My hypothesis is that the extremely low plunger mass of these guns, which is a major factor in their efficiency (120fps/1.0 with only 5 kg of spring load!) is to blame. Light plungers mean rapid acceleration and a higher rate of air flow into the barrel. If you are familiar with airguns, you know that most like looser barrel fits for maximum efficiency - their rapid pressure rise means tight barrels to build pressure are only a waste of energy on friction and the necessarily higher wasted pressure at the muzzle. Most springers, on the other hand, require tight barrels because the inefficiency of the slower pressure rise with a loose barrel outweighs the effects of the tight barrel's friction loss. That barrier essentially means that most springers are inherently inefficient devices compared to an airgun with a high-performance, fast-opening valve, and these Elites seem to be the first springers ever to tackle that - they seem to flow more like airguns than springers, especially with upgraded springs.

So, in short, don't rebarrel your Elite guns! Unless it's a longer barrel length such as a stefan-accepting breech, it will not get you anywhere. I know it seems wrong that an OMW spring with i.e. some brass shoved into the bolt won't pick up performance, but that's just what it is.

I
liked the trigger and pump placement of the Crooksbow and the handle of
the Violet Lightning. So I combined what I like along with new
improvements such as the homemade internals and custom trigger.

I made this with a scrapped BBB in poor condition, so I was not able to get it to have as much draw as you normally could.

If
I had used a new BBB I would have gotten it to shoot much harder as
well as function smoother. It still turned out great though so I am not
complaining. :)"
He has some explanation on the sight , translated here for you

'Nerf guns do not have to put a blue and white color, or with them look better.
This nerf red dot sight is a white-blue color, it is estimated that such color to match the new Elite Series this year. The aim needs to put the two batteries, the following picture is located in the battery compartment lid aiming front direction, lettering displayed above is produced in 2008'

'Aiming mirror with a transparent plastic sheet, printed on a scale. Back end aiming a red laser transmitter emitting laser side switch is open, this time red points will be projected onto the the aiming mirror plastic piece. The figure below shows the aim of the left switch'

From this we can tell that Nerf/Hasbro are using the same molds for the Elite Sight , as with most of the Elite Blasters- Sneaky Nerf!
The first thing I did was pry off the flywheels from the motors. They come off easier than you'd think with just a little bit of work with a screwdriver as a lever. I popped the wheels off the motors of the barricade, PS 48, and tommy 20. I put the wheels of the tommy 20 on the ps 48 motors. You need to grind down the barricade housing a bit here to get the bigger wheels to fit. The bigger wheels are needed to grip the smaller heads of the streamlines. The reason why I used PS 48 motors is because pre-elite the PS 48 motors put other flywheel blasters to shame. than the nomral cut and fit test, repeat that is done over and over when combining shells like this there were a few more things that needed to be done to make this work.
11.8v I tried a variety but noticed that voltage over 12ish didn't really result in a big range increase. Since this fits the stock battery try I just stuck with it.
Also credit goes to Windcalmer because I decided on where to put the rear-loading slots on my Berserker by using his as an example.
I still plan on doing many more different mods to this, but the basics are finished for now so I am putting up the writeup. I forgot to take a lot of pics, but you should get the general idea. When I open the gun up again for updates I will take much more pics to add into the writeup. Now onto the mod...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First open up your Berserker. If you have the older one there is a screw underneath the sticker.
Now carefully remove the airgun/BB part. Now unscrew the rotation mech, and remove it. After that cut down the stock barrel so that when you put your CPVC coupler over the stock barrel(After sanding) you can have it inside your rotation mech. Make sure you put on the back of the rotation mech before you attach the CPVC coupler.

Now glue on the CPVC coupler and put the rotation mech back together.
Side Note: I did this mod on another Berserker but with a PVC coupler also. You will need to widen the hole in the turret and rotation mech for it to work though.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now we will start working on the springer portion. Remove the entire springer part from the blaster. Pull out the plunger rod. Now add about a 1/2" of hotglue on the plunger rod so that it compresses the spring fully when primed.

The stock seal was great so I didn't see the need to replace it. Now take the plunger tube and cut off the orange part for the stock turret seal.

It should look something like this now:

Now drill a hole as wide as possible through it. This improves the airflow greatly, helping range. It should look like this now:

Then I wrapped the end of the plunger tube with duct tape until it would just barely still fit in the shell. Then I put a few layers of craft foam on top and made a hole through it for the air to go through. This was done because the stock seal is too small to work if the turret is rearloading.

From the front:

Now we will work on the actual turret itself. My camera died here so I don't have any pictures right now, but I will update this section with pics when I open the blaster up again. However most of this is the same as modding any other Berserkers turret so follow numat-49's write up for making the turret. However make the barrels 3" long and widen the back of each hole so you can rear load it.
Make sure that when you glue the turret together that all the barrels are glued evenly so each barrel makes a perfect seal. If you screw this up it won't work. You will have to adjust the seal by experimenting.
Now its time for the rear loading slot. First remove the stickers that are in the way from the shell. The rest you can probably figure out from the pics.

Now reassemble the blaster. It should look something like this:

Now screw it together, make a barrel for the airgun and test it. It takes a lot of experimenting with the seal to get the turret right, but when you do it should shoot about 60' flat with slugs(How far mine shoots with a decent seal).

Video showing a range test and a firing demo:

Overall I am very happy with the finished product. Rear-loading makes the turret Much nicer to use, and now that it shoots 60' it is much more effective. The airgun works great too. I still have a lot more plans for this and some of the next mods I will do to this are:
-Pump Replacement
-Titan/other airgun integration in the turret
-RSCB the BB
I will update this post once I finish those other modifications.Green Winghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15751039648868265778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1146179979337871058.post-71698963923740343902012-09-23T06:46:00.001-07:002012-09-23T06:46:04.935-07:00No Snapfire 8 or Stockades this year in the US

Orange mod works is now selling springs that will fit the Elite Retaliator and Rampage.
Buy them here

The spring is a 5kg load and costs $6.00

They will also be coming out with a kit for $12.00 that includes the spring along with an unnecessary replacement metal catch and plate for parts that no one so far has managed to break. The kit also comes with a metal trigger which might make it worth the cost for some.

I feel this spring is worth the cost due to the fact that despite the direct plunger system the Elites are very inflexible in what springs can be used.

Factors that restrict the spring dimensions:

-Has to compress to ~1 inch

There very little room to house the compressed spring so it needs to have a very low coil/in and wire diameter to fit.

-Has to clear the catch

The new elite system catch engages the back of the plunger head and has very little clearance from the rod. This restricts the outer diameter of the spring. Too big and it will hit the catch.
I just had to see how this thing worked. It's much more simple than I was expecting, which is pretty impressive from a design standpoint.

I do not recommend taking this thing apart. There are a total of 11 springs, most of which do not want to cooperate.

Just take a look at these pictures and save your self the time of having to figure out exactly how to put this thing back together to get it to work.

After removing the top the 1st tubes spring pops out at you like a jack in the box.
This exposes the tube advance arm.
Under the gray plate you see the wedge system that the arm uses to advance the drum. The other tube disc pusher upper things are still held down by the orange plate.
If you are trying to close up the drum and its not sitting correctly this is the reason. If you fully disassemble the drum you will have to insert the ends of the spring into the base shown here and and the center of the inner drum and then wind the spring again so it will advance the drum properly.

I talked to Slydev a couple months back about designing parts for his site. Now that I have settled into a new place/schedule I have time to design some parts.

My question is what do would you like to see? Is there some smaller (cost effect, 3d prints aren't cheap) part that you feel people would buy if it was available? If I think that you have a good idea that is able to be printed there is a good chance that I will design it and make it available on Slydev or on Shapways.
This is the octo-shot!
(which is a modded triple shot)
With the right spring and proper modding it can get ranges of 140ft
Here is the vid to prove it

After I first built it and fired several

Here's the priming handle with foam and hot

For the new barrels to nest in snugly, I
also had to Dremel out the remaining barrels. It took me quite a while

Don't cut it too short. Make it fit EXACTLY.
The back of the turret has a lot of
holes/spaces. I thought about hot gluing or epoxy puttying them but I
knew I could never get a smooth surface. My solution was this:

...a duo-tang folder. I sized and cut out a
circle to fit. Super glued it careful to make sure that it completely
covered the soon-to-be rear loading holes. The translucent plastic
helped with being able see the rear loading holes to Dremel out.

The turret fits in perfectly with the shell.
With the new plunger seal, it pushes quite heavily against the turret,
but with the added support to the front shell (shown earlier) it
shouldn't be a problem.

THERE YOUZ ALL GO!!!

Put it all back together and you have an Octo-shot! Darth Rambohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17591721746493686090noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1146179979337871058.post-41132355781890374312012-09-17T17:30:00.000-07:002012-09-17T17:30:00.913-07:00Glitter Gun

I made this a while back as a present for my sister. It's a supersoaker Max D 500 modded to shoot glitter and single fire 1 dart muzzle loaded. This was really just for fun and to see if I could pull it off.
More pics and info after the jump
This works off the Bernoulli principal. The fast flowing air in the barrel creates a low pressure area that sucks the glitter into the barrel where it is then shot out.

It can be used to shoot any particulate matter but the only other thing we have tried so far is sprinkles.

This is a close up of the glitter chamber which is made from a travel size shampoo bottle. The clear tube runs from the bottom of the bottle to inside the barrel.

The hole at the top allows air to flow into the bottle which then pushes the glitter up the tube and into the barrel. This hole was eventually covered by a gold mesh screen that is used in tobacco pipes. This was just to keep the glitter from falling out of the bottle if it was held upside down or sideways.
This was a little project I had to do since this everything about this blaster is totally steampunk other than it's stock colors.

I took it apart and did a very quick rang mod of removing the ARs, which just fall out like those in a maverick, and plugging the little holes in each barrel.
The ranges are good, just like you'd expect out of an air blaster. It takes about 15-20 pumps to get full range. I did have some problems with this thing exploding darts and I'm not sure why it was happening or why it stopped.
For paint I just used a satin black base and used the cheapo dollar craft paint you can find at any craft store for the metallic brass, silver and copper.
This is director Tim Burton about to unload a vulcan onto his wife Helena Bonham Carter as she primes a longshot on the set of Alice in Wonderland. I thought to see the queen of hearts / Marla Singer vs the creator of the Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, and Beetlejuice was worth a quick post.Darth Rambohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17591721746493686090noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1146179979337871058.post-57786643748249835992012-09-14T20:40:00.001-07:002012-09-14T20:43:15.838-07:00Rotator X-8 "Piece of 8" by LGCAnd so it begins....
Kicking off my first post of LGCs work with his Rotator X-8s
These are lanard blasters which are hard or overpriced to get your hands on which just makes me want one even more, especially when they are made to look like this.

These things just look amazing when painted and look like they were made to be steampunked.
More awesomeness after the jump!
It isn't a very impressive blaster its a springer that you need to prime using the knob on the bottom of the grip.
The hammer of the blaster does actually move with the trigger pull.
Here is a WIP pic before paint of a clear x-8 which as I understand can't even be found in the US. LGC seems to have no limit to random steampunky bits to build his art. I personally can't identify any of the pieces. This makes me think there is a high possiblity that this may have at one time been owned by jerm who had one shipped in before selling off his collection on ebay.

Curious results, though... there is really no appreciable difference that we saw to justify removing the air restrictors in these blasters. So here is the most clear image I could fine so far. The image is from Urban Taggers. The shell is much different from a Jolt. The only thing that looks the same is the tube size and plunger rod. Pic to the right for comparison. --->

In the vedio (After the jump) you can the triad looks like it shoots only 2 darts from the top then 1 dart from the bottom. The kid in the video reloads a dart into one of the top barrels and without the other barrel plugged up it looks as if the dart is getting very little range. This makes it look like the 2 top barrels are linked and the bottom barrel is separate. You can see that when he shoots the bottom barrel he still seems to get good power even though the top 2 barrels are empty. If you have ever played with a triple shot you know that this can't happen if all 3 barrels are linked.

The pistol in the mesh pocket of the elite vest also does not look like it was the same as the triad

One interesting thing is that in the Wired article they say:
"Several models to be introduced next fall are nearly finished—namely
the Strife, a semiautomatic pistol, and the Ruff Cut, which is only the
third blaster ever that’s capable of shooting two darts at the same time"
This begs the question as to if this might actually be a Ruff Cut with a named that decided against or if the Ruff Cut is something else all together,
Some people are saying that the AR are what would allow the single darts to fire or multiple darts to fire. This doesn't explain why the bottom dart doesn't fire the first time.
The Elite stockade will be the elite version of the barricade. At this point (9/4) it's still only available in the UK.

Here is what we All care about, the guts

These motors are NOT the same as the hailfire or the rayven. These are stubby and short and not the standard size motor you see in rayvens barricades or any other flyweel that I know of

The housing looks to be compatable with the barricade. This will be nice for people who like their clipped barricades.

The box says 20M which is 65.6ft.
However, the back of the box has this line "Fires up to 22m"
This translates into 72ft which is in line with the claims of the rest of the elites

The trigger/pusher mechanism of the Stockade vs barricade for comparison.
The only real difference that I can see:
-Pusher arm is angled on the stockade
-Return spring positon

Another difference is that the stockade has some kind of a dart tooth system where the barricade does not.

I gutted an RC car I found at a thrift store to make this set of flywheels. The wheels are 2.5in in diameter. The cool thing about big flywheels is that the linear velocity, or the speed of the outside of the wheel, is in direct proportion to the diameter. This means that all else being equal doubling the size of the flywheel will double the the velocity of the dart.

The big flywheels along with bigger motors and running it at 12-18v got ranges of around 100ft with some going way farther and some going way shorter. I stripped 2 gears for the full auto mech before I realized I need to just run it with a 9v and power the flys separately.

This could fire both streamlines or fathead darts.

While this thing was tons of fun running it at that high voltage with home made flywheels caused the motor housing to shake loose from the shell no matter what I tried to do. The flywheels were just very very slightly off center so they would cause a good amount of vibration and with that much mass and that much power it was always just a matter of time before what ever I used to attach the flys would give out.

The vibration also cause a ton of noise. This thing sounded like a vacuum cleaner fighting with a chainsaw. It was fun while it lasted but I feel like between this and The Darthramballs I've done all I care to do with the tommy 20.Darth Rambohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17591721746493686090noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1146179979337871058.post-55903362925854627082012-08-30T13:24:00.000-07:002012-08-30T15:51:05.401-07:00Longshot slamfire preview

I messed this up a bit while cleaning up the action. After fixing it a snapped a quick vid. My phone is was wedged and balanced in a way that forced me to fire in a very awkward position, so if it looks a little wonky, that's me not the blaster.

When I took this I had just got done fixing some stuff and still had a light spring in that I could pull back by hand while the blaster was open to test it out. This is just a little preview since some people expressed interest, I'll do a write up on here when its all done up and pretty.Darth Rambohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17591721746493686090noreply@blogger.com2
